The Boston Celtics are an American professional basketball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. The Celtics compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league's Eastern Conference Atlantic Division. They play their home games at the TD Garden, which they share with the National Hockey League (NHL)'s Boston Bruins. The Celtics are one of the most successful teams in NBA history; the franchise has won the most championships in the NBA with 17, accounting for 24.6 percent of all NBA championships since the league's founding in 1947. The Celtics have a rivalry with the Los Angeles Lakers, and have played the Lakers a record 12 times in the NBA Finals, of which the Celtics have won nine.

The name "Celtics" is a tribute to Boston's Irish heritage. The Celtics acquired the nickname because of the strong green color of their uniforms, which came to be known as "Celtic green". The team's mascot, Lucky the Leprechaun, is a nod to Ireland's national symbol, the shamrock.

The Celtics began play in 1946 as a charter member of the Basketball Association of America (BAA). In 1950, the Celtics joined the NBA after the BAA merged with the National Basketball League (NBL). The Celtics struggled during their early years, losing their first seven games in a row. They managed to turn things around after acquiring center Bill Russell in 1956, which helped lead them to nine NBA Championships in thirteen seasons, including eight in a row from 1959 to 1966. The Celtics dominated the league during the 1960s, winning an unprecedented eight straight championships. They remain the only NBA team to win eight straight championships.

The Celtics continued to be successful in the 1970s and 1980s, winning two more championships in 1974 and 1976. They returned to prominence in the 1980s, winning a championship in 1981 led by future Hall of Famers Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish. In the 1990s, the team suffered many personnel changes, but managed to remain competitive. They returned to the NBA Finals in two consecutive seasons (2002 and 2003), but lost in six games each time.

The Celtics returned to the NBA Finals in 2008, facing the Lakers. The Celtics won the series in six games, giving them their record 17th championship.

The Boston Celtics are pronounced "Bosn Celts".
