The German composer Joseph Haydn was born in the Austrian village of Rohrau in 1732. His father was a wheelwright and amateur musician who taught his son to play the harp, violin, and flute. Haydn's mother died when he was eight years old, and he was sent to live with his elderly grandparents in Hainburg, where he sang in the church choir and began to study music.

Haydn was an accomplished musician by the time he was sixteen, and he became a professional musician in 1749, when he was hired as a court musician by the Austrian prince Paul Anton Esterhazy. Haydn spent the next thirty years working for the Esterhazy family, composing music for their private chapel and orchestra. He became one of the most important and influential composers of the Classical period, creating hundreds of symphonies, string quartets, and other works.
