Google gives you a lot of control over the default applications associated with the core services on Android phones and tablets. One of those core services you can change is Google Assistant. As a result, you can replace Google Assistant with Alexa if you'd prefer to use Amazon's voice assistant on your Android phone or tablet. The only caveat is that you can't use your voice to activate Alexa.
Now let's walk through the steps to use Alexa on Android.
Step 1. Install the Alexa app from the Google Play Store if you haven't already, and then log in to the app using your Amazon account.
Step 2. Swipe up on your Android device's home screen to display the Apps screen, and then tap "Settings." The Settings screen is displayed.
Step 3. Tap "Apps" in the menu. The Apps screen appears, showing a list of all of the apps currently installed on your Android device.
Step 4. Tap the vertical ellipses on this screen to open a menu, and then tap "Default Apps" in this list. A list of the default apps on your Android device is displayed.
Step 5. Tap "Assist App." The Default Assistant App screen is shown.
Step 6. Tap "Device Assistance App." The Default Assist App screen is displayed.
Step 7. Tap to fill in the selector next to "Amazon Alexa." A message is displayed warning you that the assistant app will be able to read information about apps you use on your system, including information visible on your screen or accessible within apps. Tap "OK" in this message.
Going forward, when you hold down the hold button to initiate the voice assistant Alexa will respond instead of the Google Assistant.
