Here's how to root a Nexus 5 Android smartphone using adb and fastboot. This is the "manual" method I recommend so you can learn how rooting works.

This root method works on all Android versions including Android 4.4.2, 4.4.3, 4.4.4 KitKat, and 5.0/5.0.1/5.0.2/5.1 Lollipop. (For 4.4.3, 4.4.4, 5.0, and 5.1, make sure to use the latest SuperSU zip file in Step 15 on the site!)

Unlocking bootloader will ERASE EVERYTHING on your Nexus 5 so please MAKE A BACKUP before trying to root, you've been WARNED!
