While processes are more important than goals for long-term productivity, goals are important "check ins" for evaluating the effectiveness of your process. Short-term goals generally work better than long term goals. Goals should also be SMART goals - Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Results-based (or relevant), and Time-bound. This ensures that your success or failure with your goals can actually be used to evaluate your process.
