Using a lightweight device, like a Raspberry Pi, you could stay connected to an IRC session 24/7 and connect into it from multiple clients, or even from one more power hungry system.

I'm using Raspbian on the RPi and Kubuntu 14.04 on my Main system. This tutorial applies to any Debian or Ubuntu based system.

Instructions for setting up Quassel Core:
sudo apt-get install quassel-core

Instructions for setting up the Clients:
If you are using a KDE Desktop you'll need to remove Quassel - sudo apt-get remove quassel
sudo apt-get install quassel-client
Setup a Username and Password using the Quassel Client
