How To Turn Off Display After So Many Minutes on macOS [Tutorial]

You can set your Mac to go to sleep after a specified duration of inactivity. You can also set your Mac to go to sleep and wake up at a specific time.

There are two primary reasons for your Mac's screen to dim, and both are easily controlled. No matter which Mac model you have, the power settings may dim your screen after a few minutes if you do not touch the keyboard or the mouse. This is a warning that the display will soon go to sleep, so adjusting your sleep settings will eliminate the problem. Some Mac models also have ambient light sensors that dim your screen automatically if the surrounding light dims. You can turn this setting off to keep your screen brightness from changing automatically.

If you don’t want a bystander to read what’s on your Mac’s screen or just want to temporarily shut off the display—for instance, to save battery—you can take advantage of several built-in macOS features.

For that purpose, I’d typically define hot corners in Mission Control settings so that moving the mouse pointer to the upper left corner would instantly start my screen saver. The problem is, even a blank screen saver won’t completely shut off the display.

As it turns out, macOS makes your life even easier by providing a dedicated keyboard shortcut to quickly turn off a Mac’s display without having to define a screen saver or use dedicated third-party applications.

This tutorial will apply for MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, MacBook Mini's running the macOS operating system.
