Twin stick shooters can be a fun distraction. It's true they're pretty simple to program, but they can be quite solid games!
I don't know quite where this one sits.
I do love the weapon variety, customization and upgrades. I do like how fighting and health works. But the control scheme is really not the best. You can play with keyboard and mouse, or controller...and neither feels quite right. I prefer keyboard and mouse for aiming, but movement is too fast and too janky with WASD, and there's bottomless pits everywhere. Controller has far better movement, but then the AIMING becomes a janky and imprecise mess. There's no happy medium here.
It is pretty fun if you can get around the controls... But do be prepared to start from the beginning of a level, over and over again. It is true you can unlock shortcuts to get to later parts of a level faster, but there's not nearly enough of those and I found myself rushing through all the respawned crowds of enemies after each death just trying to get back to where I was...which would inevitably get me killed easier or have me careen off a ledge. It's a shame, because I DO like the combat, there's some great enemies and fun bosses, but it gets tiring fighting the same enemies again and again if you make a mistake and die.
It's a bit frustrating, but it's not a bad buy if you like this style of game. At $6, it's a fair price for what's offered.
