Recently my PS3 began failing to boot. Turns out the hard drive had bad sectors, and even when I copied all the good sectors to an identical drive, the PS3 would not recognize the new drive and wanted to format it. I was able to find a way to get the data from even the bad sectors off the old drive and onto a new one, and successfully rescued my PS3 using a utility called HxD and many hours of time babysitting the process, but if you are as desperate as I was and have the time, maybe this will work for you, too!
