Humanity in Video Games
76Because "How we attribute humanity to characters in video games and some systems by which game developers aim to create more realistic feeling social behaviour and personalities in NPCs" is a bit much for a video title
This past semester in university I took a class on Social Robots, and for the final project we had the choice between a research paper, chatbot analysis, or a creative work. I usually try to keep my personal/school life and content creation life separate, but I do really enjoy making video essays and sharing what I've learned, so I asked if I could create a short video essay for my final project, and I got the go ahead, thanks Professor! So this is the first ever video essay I've created that's also being submitted for a class, that's so crazy to think about
We discuss some of the ways in which we may already subconsciously attribute a level of humanity to characters in video games, using examples of Elden Ring, Xenoblade Chronicles X, and Pokémon (games like Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, or Undertale would've been great examples too)
Then we discuss some AI systems made to create more realistic feeling NPCs in terms of their actions and/or social behaviour, where I use examples of Oblivion's Radiant AI/Radiant Story, Warner Bros Nemesis System, and Triangle Strategy's Conviction System
