The story takes place some time after the events of the first game. Linda has assimilated back into an ordinary life, but a strange evil has appeared again, leaving her the only thing standing in her way.

The gameplay of Dreadout 2 follows a more realistic and action-based, but familiar gameplay style compared to the first game.

Just like the first game, Linda can use her IrisPhone to fight ghosts, but that's no longer an exclusive way to fight them. Furthermore, there are now two types of ghosts: intangible and physical. Intangible ghosts can only be damaged by IrisPhone whereas physical ghosts can only be physically damaged by thrown weapons or projectiles. Depending on the scenario, Linda may have no way of defending herself from the supernatural and will have to rely on escaping or hiding.

The game world is now filled with NPCs, both ghosts and humans. Talking to them unlocks side missions that players can choose to perform and learn items. There is also a collection available from talking to Professor Mona, which involves the player documenting and photographing the urban legends surrounding the area.
