HyperX visits De’Aaron Fox to help him set up his Twitch stream with OBS. Khoi tests his upload speed, helps him set up his stream key, set his bitrate, resolution, FPS, scenes and sources, the webcam, image overlay, and chroma key. Khoi also gives some tips on how to be a good streamer and grow your channel, namely; Have consistent schedule, engage with your viewers, and find your niche as an entertaining streamer.
0:15 Download OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) studios on your platform. Gauge your upload speed by visiting http://speedtest.net For a stable stream, we recommend using around 1/3 of your upload speed. The speed test is in Mbps but the settings in OBS are in kbps. Divide the Mbps in your test by 3 and move the decimal two numbers to the right. In our test, De’Aaron’s ISP’s upstream bandwidth was 11.92 Mbps. Divide this by 3 and we get 3.973. Move the decimal point over two digits to the right and we get 3973 kbps, which rounds up to 4000 kbps.
0:58 Set up OBS by clicking Settings on the bottom right panel. Default settings in General will suffice.
1:15 Go to Stream Tab and then Stream Type. Set the Service to Twitch. Set server to either Auto Recommended or choose the closest server to your location.
1:20 To get your stream key at Twitch.tv/TwitchUserName/dashboard go to settings section on the left hand side, click Stream key, and then click show key. Copy and paste it onto the stream key box in the Stream Tab. DO NOT SHOW YOUR STREAM KEY TO OTHERS!
1:45 Go to the Output Tab. Set the video Bitrate to 1/3 of your upload speed. Set Encoder to x264 for CPU or NVENC for Video Card.
2:05 Keep the Audio Tab with the default settings.
2:15 If your upload speed isn’t above 10Mbps, the recommended Output resolution is 720p at 30 FPS. De’Aaron is a Twitch Partner and his bandwidth is 11.92 Mbps so we set his bitrate in OBS to 6500 kbps which is the maximum allowable for Twitch Partners. If he wasn’t a partner, we would have recommended 4000 kbps.
2:38 With Hotkey Setup you can set up a hotkey to start stream, end stream, change scenes, etc.
2:50 Set up Scenes and Sources. Whichever source is on the top will be the one shown. To Add the Elgato USB video interface, click the Add button, choose video capture device, choose device, and then leave the rest of the settings on default. To add a webcam, click Add Button, choose video capture device, and select your webcam of choice.
4:15 To add a game source from the PC (the game needs to be in FULLSCREEN. Otherwise, you may experience issues with capturing footage.) For the best FPS rate choose, Game Capture, look for your desired game, and choose it. If the game source shows a black screen, make sure the game is loaded, actively running, and not minimized. Another capture method called Monitor Capture records whatever is being displayed on your monitor, any websites, skype etc. Please make sure you are aware of what is on the monitor that is being captured, as it is recording EVERYTHING on your monitor.
5:00 To set up the “Green Screen” or Chroma Key, right-click your webcam source, and then choose Filters. Click the Add button on the bottom of Effect Filters and choose Chroma Key as desired Filter. Choose Key Color Type (this should match the color of your background) and adjust knobs freely to remove as much of the background as possible.
