For years, me and my best friend regularly revisted Die Hard Arcade, just wishing it had gotten a sequel. What we didn't know is that the game did get a sequel - two of them, in fact, in the forms of Dynamite Cop and Asian Dynamite!
Making things even weirder, I've owned and regularly played through Dynamite Cop since it's UK release over 20 years ago without noticing it was Die Hard Arcade 2.
How does that happen? Well, in Japan, Die Hard Arcade, Dynamite Cop and Asian Dynamite are all part of the Dynamite Deka series. Thanks to a western exclusive licensing deal for the original game, that wasn't renewed for the sequels, game titles, character names and in-game graphics were altered that masked the (in hindsight, obvious) links between these titles.
It was the Sega Ages PlayStation 2 remake of Die Hard Arcade that actually made me aware of the Dynamite Deka franchise, finally allowing me to notice that I had been playing one of my childhood favourites for decades!
