Dreams of a Marionette Matinee: A Memoir
This is the first true album as I dream of you endlessly. It is nothing but a true reflection of my being. A glance at the looking glass in which I see a fool, something less than human and more in line with a ghost clad in your white bed sheets. Bearing the weight of crushing nostalgia, dreams, nightmares, and an unending desire to be forgotten, to be let go. For once, I've taken my time with this release. I've spent countless hours mixing and mastering every single track, which was seldom something I would ever do for past releases. In spite of my efforts, some aspects of this album are still rough, but at this point I suppose those aspects have essentially become part of my sound. Just a glance at the lyrics for this album will shed light on my cyclical thoughts and dreams. The dreams in which I am tethered to strings extended from the clouds, and forced to drown in the cold, black water. Each and every night I bear these dreams. In my waking hours they have such a hold on my heart that there is little for me to imagine but my lungs filling and my heart becoming warm and sodden with the light of an end.
As much as I try to distance myself from black metal, there is a tinge of it in everything I make. The wails, the yearning for death, the profound isolation. In spite of these commonalities, this album is almost entirely influenced, by the traditional Chinese folk musicians, Lin Youren and Zeng Chengwai, the enigmatic and dearly missed head of Shock Therapy, Gregory "Itchy" John McCormick, and the beautifully subdued acoustic ambient works of Fraser McGowan as Caught in the Wake Forever. I hope that none of these influences are audible in this release. The ways that they have touched my heart reach far beyond music and into every fiber of my being and every seam that stitches me together. In a much more impactful way the literature in which I've surrounded myself with has had a much greater influence on this album. The naturalist, paleontological, and ornithological endeavors of Loren Eiseley, to whom I am ever indebted, Michael Blencowe, and Walter Mantell have greatly shaped me. As well, the dreamy and deprecating works of Neil Gaiman and Mike Mignola have hung heavy in my head for quite some time now. I choose to be open about my influences as way to relieve some stress of severe imposter syndrome. Should some aspect of my work take influence from others then they are due the same credit in its creation as I am.
I would like to thank my brother, Nigel, for everything. I love you dearly. I am most certain I would not be sitting here writing this if it were not for you. I am still here and you are here as well, and given these circumstances I still have the chance everyday to tell you how much I love you.
