📚 Description: Hunting down original Gibson prototypes is always fun. Sometimes you find some really strange, quirky guitars that just weren't meant to be, prototypes of limited-run models that have their own cult followings... and other times you find something truly special like today. A prototype of a guitar that was eventually mass-produced in large quantities that many people still have a soft spot for yet today. While this is my LEAST favorite model Gibson has ever made... this Gibson Sonex Prototype is a real treat to have found!
Come take a look at the Gibson Original Prototype of a 1980 Gibson Sonex 180 Deluxe. It's a prototype and it is freaky!
The prototype for this run is kind of a freak of nature in the fact that this DOES NOT have the resinwood "plastic/wood/plastic" body. They hadn't gotten that far in the design yet. There is no wooden core - this is just a plastic shell that is hollow similar to one of those Resoglass Airline guitars that Jack White uses. As far as I'm aware, Gibson has NEVER made a guitar like that. The pickups this one uses are prototype "velvet bricks" that are actually pretty good and read nearly 1.5x what the production ones do (similar to the dirty fingers used in the higher-end models.) To make things even weirder - it has a 3-piece MAHOGANY neck without a volute similar to what would be found on the 1979 GK-55 model. It has a large headstock with the regular Gibson logo as well with the Gibson tuners. The final big spec to know about this prototype is it was made in the original Kalamazoo plant and not in Nashville like all of the other Sonex models.
Watch the video to learn all the quirks of this guitar! Condition wise it is pretty clean, but does show many scratches and light dings. This was originally given to the marketing team member of Gibson who did all the photos for Gibson. As a non-musician, he's kept it under his bed since.
