I got to play Skull & Bone here are my thoughts, ''UNSCRIPTED'' cautiously OPTIMISTIC
WHAT IT GOT RIGHT:
The game looks great, the graphics, details, ocean, ambient, animals, lighting, and storms all look fantastic very immersive, and beautiful.
The POV camera changes everything. Having that third-person view of the ship really downplays the size and magnitude of the ships we are sailing, therefore allowing you to play in first person while in the ship was amazing i loved the feeling of sailing in a storm or fighting on that POV
the sailing mechanics are good enough, I have a background in dailing so respecting the wind and the ship actually being affected by it instead of just ignoring it is fantastic.
The character creation is good, nothing out of this world but good enough for what it is.
WHAT IT GOT WRONG:
I was only allowed around 6 hours of gameplay which makes me worried. Could it be they limited the beta gameplay time because they don't have much to show?
The world feels tiny. There's no sense of sailing the open sea, just a hectic and noisy theme park.
Everything feels geared towards the inevitable microtransactions and battle pass. I feel sorry for the devs who have obviously worked tremendously hard on this game, only for Ubisoft to do what Ubisoft does.
The combat is horribly simplistic. There's no damage modeling on ships (aside from shooting the glowing red bits for critical damage), so all you're doing is chipping away at their hitpoints. You can't target the sails or distmast ships, and you can't knock out cannons or crew.
You can't physically leave your ship. You can go to land but it's a teleport action. You cannot just jump off your ship and swim to shore. Equally, when your ship is docked 2 feet from the shoreline, you have to take a darned boat or go to the embarkment point. It snaps the immersion
You cannot board ships. There is a boarding element to the game but you simply sail up next to the target, press triangle, and you get a cut scene simulating the boarding.
Equally, there are loads of wrecks, but you don't explore any of them. You just sail next to them and do a bizarre QTE / Minigame and get your rewards
