I found out that the curses of the game become available after defeating the respective boss that "unleashes" each one of them. In my case, I have two curses available as I defeated King Scorpion and Scrapjack before. And, effectively, the difficulty of the game is significantly higher when both curses are active. But also, new features of the game appeared, like driving a vehicle and using it to kill Werebulls. Unfortunately, I couldn't defeat King Scorpion when the curses were active, but I was very close at some attempts. I will try again when the time is right.
