I must accept reality...
...that games are just one part of reality, and that fun will always be valid.
But if you want a scientific foundation for that, then look no further than Thomas Malaby's theoretical notion of contingency. Games give us all of the emotion of reality: fright, achievement, fun, because they sit squarely as just one more experience that we can have. There's nothing in the brain that separates my experience of breeding an outrageous number of Allays in the new Minecraft 1.19 update, from barbequing some burgers while out camping. Or driving, or anything else. The stakes feel real, because sometimes falling into lava, or the glee of breeding Allays, is a real experience that we're having.
And we're never too old for that.
