I Spent $1100 Reducing Power Usage on Elasticsearch Nodes - Let's Play Index Servers
My servers are peaking at 14 amps on a 15 amp circuit. If I add anymore servers to the rack or if I push my existing servers any harder, I can potentially trip the circuit breaker, which would of course power everything down. Before I can expand the functionality of Esports Earnings and Let's Play Index, I absolutely need to lower the power draw of my servers.
My solution to the problem involves 384GB of DDR3L ECC RAM that I spent $1100 on to acquire. This is low voltage RAM running at 1.35v instead of the 1.5v of regular DDR3, thus needing less power to function. I'll be replacing the memory in my Elasticsearch nodes to reduce power usage since it's the worst offender, and I'll also be removing one processor from each node.
At this point in time, the 4 nodes in this Supermicro 2U server build make up my entire Elasticsearch cluster. Elasticsearch is used by Let's Play Index for game detection on YouTube videos, and it aggregates the data such as the total number of views to videos for a specific game.
This is one of many videos to come regarding the hardware acquisitions, and underlying infrastructure of my two web projects: Let's Play Index and Esports Earnings. Lowering the power draw of the Elasticsearch nodes was essential for the continued growth of Let's Play Index.
Let's Play Index is a database of let's players and reviewers organized in a way to help discover new and upcoming talent, rank content creators based on the video games they play, and help them optimize their metadata. It relies on the YouTube API to function, and the data pulled from YouTube is then organized and mixed in with our own video game data and algorithms to create rankings, listings for obscure content creators, and reviews and let's plays for specific games.
