Þórsmerkurvegur (F249) is used by tour guides to travel to visit the active volcano Eyjafjallajökull and accommodations that are stations up there with beautiful views.
Þórsmerkurvegur nr. F249 is the road used to see the Seljalandsfoss waterfall (which is shown on a video on this channel). The road is very unsafe and is only suitable for 4x4 vehicles because there are over 20 rivers that block the road that have to be crossed to carry on down it. The road is only reccommended for 4x4 vehicles. If you visit it make sure you do not try to cross the Krossá River even though you have crossed all the other rivers without any problems because it is very dangerous.
The River shown leads from Þórsmörk/ Thórsmörk to the Atlantic Ocean via the Krossá River.
Þórsmörkis a mountain ridge in Iceland that was named after the Norse god Thor (Þór) and is seen in this footage as the back drops to those farms. It is situated in the south of Iceland between the glaciers Tindfjallajökull and Eyjafjallajökull. The name 'Thórsmörk' properly refers only to the mountain ridge between the rivers Krossá, Þröngá and Markarfljót,but is sometimes used informally to describe a wider area that includes the region between Thórsmörk and Eyjafjallajökull. Thórsmörk is one of the most popular hiking areas in Iceland.
In the valley, the river Krossá winds between the mountains. The valley is closed in between glaciers, Mýrdalsjökull being at the rear end of the valley. This leads to an especially warm climate, better than in the rest of south Iceland. In the protected valley, there is green vegetation of moss, fern, birchwood and other small shrubs.
Thórsmörk is popular amongst hikers. A lot of different tours are possible, from hiking on the glaciers to trekking (i.e., Laugavegur up to Landmannalaugar) or smaller expeditions, such as to the canyon Stakkholtsgjá with its waterfall or five small day treks, to the summits of surrounding peaks, with rewarding views, even in the worse of weather. The Krossá is a cold fast river coming down from glaciers: a bridge allows pedestrians to cross. There are daily coach arrivals, from Reykjavík and other towns in Iceland, but as stated this river should not be attempted to be crossed.
