[Beautiful Iceland Series Part Nine]

Deildartunguhver is Europe's most powerful hot spring and a tourist attraction that isn't as popular as other hot springs such as the famous the Blue Lagoon. It provides 180 l/sec of 100°C hot water. The water from Deildartunguhver provides most of the water used for central heating in the towns of Borgarnes (Population: just under 2000) and Akranes (Population: under 5,500) through the pipes you can see in this video. The hot water pipeline to Akranes is 64 km long, the longest in Iceland and the water is about 78 - 80 degrees when it reaches Akranes. If you take a shower anywhere within a 65 km radius of the spring, you would have already bathed in the hot water from this powerful spring.

Seen in this video is some construction of the Krauma, geothermal baths at Deildartunguhver. About the baths, Just 70 meters north of the natural hot spring ,Deildartunguhver, KRAUMA geothermal nature baths are now under development. Ground breaking took place on April 26th 2015, with construction beginning a couple of days later. The 550m2 building will consist of a Main Building, with changing facilities for 140 people, a restaurant and bar, and a souvenir shop. Outdoors on the premises you will be able to enjoy hot tubs, saunas and a unique tranquility room. Easy access to the Deildartunguhver hot springs will be provided by a heated walkway. Parking will be available. Travelers will also be able to arrive by helecopter, a heleport is being built just west of Krauma, conected by a walking path. The Architect for this project is Brynhildur Sólveigardóttir. With project manager Sigurður Árni Magnússon.

Interestingly, a fern called the "deer fern" or "hard fern", Blechnum spicant, grows near Deildartunguhver. This fern grows nowhere else in Iceland.

Location: Reykdælavegur, Iceland. Off of Borgarfjarðarbraut (Route 50).

Better Location Information:

While in the Reykholt area, it’s well worth checking out the biggest hot spring in Europe, Deildartunguhver, which lies near the hamlet of Kleppjárnsreykir, 5km west of Reykholt on the side of Route 50.

Enjoy! :)
