Westmill is a working organic farm. The Westmill Wind Farm Co-operative was the first 100% community owned onshore wind farm to be built in the south-east of England. The five turbine site at Watchfield, Swindon, was commissioned in March 2008. The five turbines created around 1.3 MW each and are erected in a line along the disused runway of the former RAF Watchfield. The turbines were erected in 8 days and the first fully month of generation was March 2008.
The wind farm is intended to help to reduce dependence on fossil fuels whose emissions are considered to contribute to climate change. In 2007 Westmill Wind Farm Co-operative received a Schumacher Award.
On an annual basis the wind farm will produce on average 10.2GW hours of electricity; enough to power on average 2,500 homes and it avoids 5,000 tonnes of CO2. Over the last five years the farm has been visited by over 10,000.
