This question seems horrifying to me now, and I can't believe that Final Fantasy 8 didn't really sit with this. It's mentioned in a few scenes, has some plot relevance, but is virtually disregarded.

Final Fantasy 8 was my first Final Fantasy game, and one of the first games I bought from Playstation. I had no idea what I was doing, and no idea that it was considered not a very good FF game.

The more I think about it, I realize that it was trying to innovate beyond its time. It was juggling a lot of balls up in the air and it didn't stick the landing (my favorite mixed metaphor.) It was trying to fight the common JRPG trope of level grinding. It did so through a mechanic called the "junction system", where one could junction special beings called Guardian Forces and magic to improve one's stats and abilities.

In this sax cover story of FFVIII's Blue Fields, I muse about the unusual Guardian Force junction system. Because, see, there's in-plot relevance of *how* Guardian Forces and the junction system work that is a bit disturbing.
