In a desolated landscape, I reflect upon the greed that motivates villainy in classic JRPGs such as Chrono Trigger, Terranigma, and Secret of Mana. Evil is usually portrayed as desiring destruction for its own sake, but upon taking a further look, it's possible to see evil as preserving some perceived good by sacrificing some other function.

In Chrono Trigger, the future is traded for immortality.

In Terranigma, a bargain is made that immortality can be achieved through the sacrifice of higher thinking (rendering its victims as zombies.)

In Secret of Mana, the struggle is over the very force of mana itself that perpetuates in all life. Balance is sacrificed for control.
