I'm Tired of Silent Protagonists in JRPGs
Hey guys it's Tiller and boy am I tired of Silent protagonists.
So over the course of a few months we've been given a lot of JRPGs. And a lot of them are quite interesting.
With Fire Emblem Three Hopes first making me realize, how sick and tired I am of silent protagonists. I think Soul Hackers 2 has also amplified this, even if I don't think the game is that good.
They're often given features such as being a good listener and being quiet but determined, but more often than not it means their character can fall a bit flat. I began to wish for characters like Aether in Genshin Impact and Joker in Persona 5 Royal to speak instead of remaining silent.
It becomes awkward and brings down key moments in a plot when the main character is supposed to express some heavy emotion and fails to do so because they're not allowed to speak.
That's not to say it can't be done but I feel like in the current industry, unless your protagonist is a nothing character (Like in Pokemon), it's time to let them speak for themselves. You can still make decisions for them, influencing their character slightly but many games do show that this isn't something that HAS to be done.
I just want there to be more voiced protagonists in games. Self insert is something I personally don't value anymore, sure naming my character isn't a big deal or being able to make romance choices or anything, I really couldn't care less whether those are still available, but I wish there was more to my protagonists, even if they are a partial self insert.
Even Genshin recently implemented voicelines for Aether. He doesn't get to actually talk though, it's only his thoughts.
Anyways, thanks for watching.
