Dawn of the Mexica is an Indie Traditional Roguelike by Pablo Barrón set in a tough Jungle world of eternal darkness and vicious beasts.
Your quest: Retrieve the Sun! Off into the random Jungle of Doom with you!
Think Aztec Angband, but with tiles and even more lethal! In Dawn of the Mexica, every part of your body can be damaged! Yay! Dawn of the Mexica has great moody music too, so you can wander the dread jungle in style!

As a Traditional Roguelike, both Procedural Generation of the world, and permadeath is a given, giving each action taken real weight and meaning.
There is some light meta progression in terms of unlocking additional classes, like in ToME (Tale of Maj’Eyal), but these are side grade, not upgrades.
There are 12 character classes total, with 10 to unlock through accomplishments in game, and has over 40 skills to choose to customize your character.

Dawn of the Mexica also has a deep magic system that really feels different, encouraging a thoughtful playstyle where you meditate before casting to improve your success casting the spell. It makes magic feel far more different then just throwing different color balls of light at foes, and separates ranged attacks from magical nicely.
Light magic, fire, healing, blessing, and more, all offer interesting options to help handle the brutal rain forest born of procedural generation.

Dawn of the Mexica also tracks the temperature, which could cause you to overheat or freeze, and wind direction, giving your scent away to hungry forest fiends, and don’t forget the dark, a torch or light spell gives you away too…

So, if you want a break from the typical high fantasy stuff, give Dawn of the Mexica a glance with me, and see if Dawn of the Mexica is the roguelike for you. It certainly is unique; great music too.
