In 1963 she left Minneapolis for Mattel. She designed Barbie clothes for 35 years
Barbara Millicent Barbie Roberts is originally from Wisconsin. but one of her famous fashion designers is from Minneapolis. How did you get into fashion? I learned to sew by watching my grandmother as a little girl. Well. you know. when Barbie was created. we had to keep track of what was happening. The trends of fashion. music. art. world business everything. I see it on the 19th with the local Barbie club and some of my neighbors who love Barbie...were going to celebrate! I have. I havent quite decided what Im going to wear yet. ALEX CIPOLLE: I definitely have. SAM STROOZAS: I love the cast. And I love Greta Gerwig. CAROL SPENCER: I would say my absolute favorite is the Benefit Ball Barbie doll. And thats the first doll that ever bore the name of the fashion designer who designed it for Mattel. Before that we were a closely guarded secret. But Mattel has always had multiple designers. Each of us had our own strengths. We did different things. And no one is the same all over the world. So different approaches were needed. But we all wanted our name applied to specific Barbie dolls. And I would say that would be the first choice. In fact. comparable to this is the Golden Jubilee Barbie doll. which at the time I made it was the most expensive dress ever made.
