I was hopeful for this game going in. I have a lot of affection for source mods, and even accounting for that, Nightmare House 2 was a real treat. Nightmare House 2, however, came out in 2010, and a lot can change since then, so I tried to have my expectations in check.

In Sound Mind surpassed my wildest of expectations. It managed to have the feel of a source game (a pure positive in my book) combined with environments that source couldn't hope to attain. The level design was intriguing and expansive without being confusing and obtuse. The combat, well, it left something to be desired, but it didn't pull down my enjoyment of the game.

I was worried that the zones would drag on like the Allen one did, but thankfully that was the only one that went on too long for me. The monster designs were imaginative, and the monster in Lucas's area was incredible.

The writing may have been my favorite part. When I found out this was a psychological horror, I was pessimistic. That's rarely a good match for me. This, however, managed to be sympathetic and touching, and at times flat out goofy in the best way. I haven't enjoyed a game this much in quite a while.

I heartily recommend this game.
