1Volo virtuale sull'atollo di Wake nei primi giorni di dicembre 1941, antecedenti all'omonima battaglia. L'aereo è un Grumman F6F Hellcat, non ancora entrato in servizio in quel momento ma con la livrea del F4F Wildcat del Capitano Henry T.Elrod.
Il primo bombardamento aereo giapponese sull'atollo avvenne l'8 dicembre, l'indomani dell'attacco a Pearl Harbor, a seguito del quale solo 4 Wildcat dei 12 presenti nella base rimasero superstiti. Il Capitano Erold assieme a 3 compagni del VMF-211 uscirono in volo a fronteggiare le navi giapponesi e ondate quotidiane di bombardamenti aerei, contribuendo con la sottodimensionata artiglieria del personale di terra a resistere all'attacco aeronavale fino al 23 dicembre, giorno in cui la guarnigione statunitense dell'isola si arrese all'occupazione nipponica.

The first Japanese aerial bombardment of the atoll occurred on December 8th, the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, following which only 4 Wildcats of the 12 present at the base remained survivors. Captain Erold together with 3 companions of VMF-211 flew out to face the Japanese ships and daily waves of aerial bombardments, contributing the undersized artillery of the ground personnel to resist the air-naval attack until December 23rd, the day in which the US garrison of the island surrendered to Japanese occupation.
