The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has sworn in nine out of the ten Resident Electoral Commissioners (REas) recently appointed by president Tinubu and subsequently cleared by the National Assembly.

Addressing the REC's immediately after their inauguration, the Chairman of INEC, Prof Mahmood Yakubu reminded them that the task to conduct election is not only a huge responsibility but also a sacred duty.

He however warned them to operate within the limits of their delegated powers and responsibilities, saying the commission will not hesitate to deal with acts. of defiance and indiscretion.

Responding on behalf of the new REC's, Mrs Toyin Babalola, expressed their commitment to work inline within the confines of the law and support the efforts of the commission for a credible electoral process.
Among the newly sworn in RECs are three former and serving Directors of the commission.

The REC designate from Akwa Ibom state Etekamba Umoren is expected to take his oath of office in January 2024 when the tenure of the Resident Electoral Commissioner from the state currently serving in Delta expires.
