In the early hours of Friday morning, a dramatic police pursuit unfolded on the streets of Santa Monica and Brentwood, culminating in a chaotic series of collisions on the 405 Freeway. The incident began at approximately 4:30 a.m. when a Los Angeles Police Department patrol vehicle, responding to a disturbance call, was rammed by a woman driving a van. The LAPD reported the incident on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The suspect, fleeing the scene, initiated a perilous chase, prompting police to begin a pursuit classified as an assault with a deadly weapon at 4:49 a.m. The situation escalated rapidly, with Sky5 capturing live footage of the pursuit along Santa Monica Boulevard shortly after 5 a.m., as multiple patrol units trailed the erratic driver.
The pursuit reached a critical point on the 405 Freeway, where the driver recklessly crashed head-on into several vehicles, bringing the chase to a dramatic halt near Sunset Boulevard in the Brentwood area. Eyewitnesses and video footage revealed the intensity of the chase, with the driver repeatedly attempting to ram patrol vehicles and even leaning out of her window to shout at officers.
In a startling turn, the suspect reversed course at one point, chasing a police vehicle down a street in a desperate attempt to collide with it. "This is nuts. She’s chasing a black and white. She’s got a couple of other cars behind her... Look at this. This is just craziness," reported Sky5’s Mike Case.
Despite several attempts by police to perform pit maneuvers on the northbound 405 Freeway, the driver continued her reckless flight. Chris Schauble, reporting on the incident, noted, "They showed incredible restraint. By law, they probably could have used lethal force."
The situation further deteriorated as the suspect drove against traffic, causing multiple head-on collisions. The van finally became disabled after a particularly severe crash that left at least one vehicle badly damaged. Unfazed, the woman exited the van and climbed atop a big rig, where she remained until officers managed to take her into custody.
Law enforcement experts, speaking to KNX News Radio, suggested that the woman appeared to be under the influence of drugs. The bloodied suspect was eventually placed in an ambulance and transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
The incident resulted in two officers being injured and hospitalized, though both were reported to be in stable condition. Remarkably, none of the innocent drivers involved in the collisions sustained serious injuries.
This high-stakes pursuit underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in managing dangerous and unpredictable situations on the roads of Los Angeles.
