What's gaming's worst mechanic? Instant Kill Pitfalls! Sometimes called, "Bottomless Pits", "Gaps", or just plain "Holes", these cheap life drainers are abundant in the original Super Mario Bros. NES game. I recently decided to go back and replay Super Mario Bros to see for myself, what made it such a great commercial success. In doing so, I discovered a video game ancestry I was previously ignorant to and also, a common gaming trope, that I have now grown to resent.
