[ABOUT]
Video games have become more unstable in recent years. After a brief history, analysing the important factors for decent performance in video games, I explain why that may be...

This is a video essay discussing bad fps / low frame rates in modern day video games like Assassins Creed Shadows; while also providing a few examples of the funny bugs and glitches found in the game. I feel as if games used to be more stable. From the N64 to the Xbox 360, we were always guaranteed a certain standard of performance. I remember Xbox games being more consistent with their frame-rates, always delivering on the standard 720p 30fps experience of the time, while also containing fewer bugs and glitches. They also messed up Gsync, which causes flickering.

The worst you would find is an "out of bounds" glitch or intentional, "infinite ammo" glitch. In the modern age, we can't even render our character models correctly. Newer games want to offer both experiences. Great performance while being visual impressive. They often try to have their cake and eat it too by offering players the choice to switch between "Quality" or "Performance" modes. But isn't good performance a factor for good quality? I see it as a way to justify poor optimisations and lower frame rates in games that aren't visually impressive enough to warrant the struggle.

For example, Ghost of Tsushima is just as visually impressive. Yet, that game could run even on a Playstation 4. Spider-man, Red dead redemption 2, God of war, all running fine on a base ps4. The way I see it, there's really no excuse for shadows to have the performance issues it does.

Additionally, Ray tracing is permanently on, with no way to turn it off in the game's hideout. They justified this by claiming that it needed to stay on because it's important for the customisations that take place there... Therefore console players are limited to just 30 fps on their games systems advertising 120 fps.
