DEAD SPACE: a title that says it all!
What do you expect from a title like this?
Space is beautiful but it is also lethal! There is one thing that many do not consider about space... darkness!
And it is from darkness that the deepest fears are formed.
Small premise: if you are one of those people who, when they are home alone, jump at the slightest noise... maybe this is not exactly the right title for you!
Despite being a game published in the “far” 2008 by EA, it is still one of the best survival horror games around and it seems to never get old (Fear does not get old).
The story begins on the mining ship, USG Ishimura, which seems to have some problems since it has ceased operations.
Our protagonist's task is to repair the damage and return but... perhaps avoiding a space station that does not respond to radio requests would have been better, but for our Isaac on the ship there is Nicole, who had made herself heard shortly before the mission and with whom he seems to have had a previous history with a wound that has not yet healed.
The journey between the missions of this game is progressively more and more hallucinatory.
Throughout the journey on the ship there is a dark, gloomy atmosphere with heavy horror tones. The silence and the soft lights leave room for blind corners that make the thing even more scary.
And right there in the darkness, disgusting deformed beings seek blood and dismember bodies. So the rescue mission becomes a survival mission!
In addition to the various weapons, what will save us on several occasions is the suit, which we will gradually have to upgrade to escape and face decidedly impenetrable monsters. The suit then, in addition to protection, has two particular functions which are the kinetic module to attract and/or pull objects without touching them and stasis, which slows things or enemies.
Isaac's movements are often too slow but this also serves to increase the tension in the scariest moments in which perhaps you find yourself without ammunition, the life bar on the spine of the suit drops and turns red, and you have to run away before being dismembered! As well as the light of the weapon to illuminate certain darker points! Everything is designed to increase the sense of anxiety and to make your hair stand on end with fear!
Even the scenes in the vacuum of space with limited oxygen reserves help to amplify the anxiety, thanks above all to fantastic sound effects! If it doesn't scare you, play it with headphones and/or medium/high volume! Every sound is carefully studied, from the creaking, the rustling, the shots, etc...
The game levels are quite linear, you have to go to a place, repair a piece, go back and complete the mission, but many environments are real labyrinths!
In short, a continuous adrenaline rush trying to aim more precisely at the enemy that comes at us! Some also have to be hit in the head, otherwise it splits and from one you end up with about twenty!
The Italian dubbing is not great (Dario Argento is among the main voice actors), in some parts a bit poor. In the "original" language it definitely works better! But this is clearly a personal opinion!
So what? So the game doesn't have the details in the plot and the map of for example Bioshock, (in fact at the end you will realize that you have basically only shot at shape-shifting aliens that come from behind you), but it is definitely a "scary" title in every sense! If you love the horror genre you can't miss playing it! (and maybe even 2, but we'll talk about that another time).
Dead Space is truly a game for those who have guts!
