Ah! The Cold War! A good time to be afraid of the nuclear winter!
If there is one thing that our parents' generation knows well, it is the crazy fear that the USA and the USSR would start dropping nuclear bombs on each other. While the Americans showed their terror through Hollywood films, the Russian people were no exception. This fear of the end of the world as we know it today led writer Dmitry Glukhovsky to imagine what life would be like in Moscow if the atomic bombs had actually arrived. The author began writing Metro 2033 in high school, filling the time he spent every day on the subway to go to school. And this is where the story of the video game of the same name based on this best seller begins.
Metro 2033, the game first released in 2010, then remastered with its sequel (Metro Last Light) for the next-gen consoles PlayStation 4 and Xbox One under the name Metro Redux, is a post-apocalyptic video game set in Moscow. “In” Moscow? Maybe I should have said “under” Moscow! As we see in the prologue and in some flashbacks, the population of the city found shelter (and home) in the Metro after the nuclear war of 2013 that annihilated almost the entire human race and brought the entire world to a nuclear winter.
Down here, the few survivors have built their own society, making the most of what they had and using bullets as currency. Twenty years later, Artyom, the protagonist, who grew up in the subway, must go to deliver a message to a station and to do so he will have to leave there and face the world on the surface that now does not allow life ... or at least not to human beings! The surface, in fact, is populated by mutant beings who manage to live in those conditions and who have a certain passion for fresh human flesh!
But be careful! Because not all mutants could be enemies!
The few moments of peace are in the Metro, where we feel truly protected, safe, at home. Here you can listen to the conversations of passers-by, the songs, watch the children playing but out there, Metro 2033, is a game that keeps you constantly busy! In addition to having constant objectives, which can be consulted via the notepad in your hand which also contains a compass, the game forces you not to get distracted or lost in useless details since there are few bullets, many monsters and, in the missions on the surface, the protagonist is constantly forced to change the filters of his gas mask to avoid dying of suffocation! It involves so much that every now and then you realize that you are actually holding your breath in a useless attempt to consume less oxygen!!
Metro is a ruthless, pure and raw experience, which puts you in front of choices to make and which will inevitably change the ending! Exactly, there are different endings based on your choices during the game. They will not be simple choices like "do I choose this or that?" "do I choose to go here or there?", everything you do from start to finish will lead, in about ten hours, to a different conclusion.
The gameplay is pleasant, typical of shooters of those years, but which does not fear the passing of time. Unfortunately, sometimes the visual feedback of the shooting animation seems not to be precise because it does not always return a natural movement.
The graphics, especially in the remastered version, are not bad but not excellent either. However, the developers have made good use of some visual effects such as lights, shadows and smoke, inserting them perfectly into the scenes. The colors are always very dark and tending towards gray / green to give that feeling of unease and darkness that make the gaming experience more linked to the precarious condition in which the protagonist finds himself. The darkness, on the other hand, inevitably reigns supreme and, together with a clean screen free of HUDs, involves the player giving a mixed sense of fear and claustrophobia.
The audio section is fantastic! Playing Metro 2033, in the dark, with headphones or with a good surround system, will make your hair stand on end and not only that!
A title that makes you want to play it over and over again, remaining among the most beloved survival horrors and also leading to two equally successful sequels!
Ultimately, we really enjoyed Metro 2033 and can only recommend it!
