Introduction to COVID Blaster
COVID Blaster is a personal, portable air filtering system that not only filters the air you breathe by using NP95 certified material (or other specific chemical or gas filter material) but a powerful UVC (265nm) light system that actually destroys the DNA within a virus rendering it harmless. Using a commonly available low cost Canon LP-E6N Li-ION battery and pairing them, the COVID Blaster allows up to 10 hours uninterrupted operation with the ability to change out the batteries in tandem for no disruption in your protection. To add to its power input versatility, the COVID Blaster can be powered from an external 12-20 VDC power source as well.
COVID Blaster’s design concentrates on the filtering process and leaves the mask design to those who have been doing it for decades like 3M and other safety mask manufacturers. COVID Blaster is made to connect to a variety of nose/mouth or full face masks with removable filters through its 20mm diameter CPAP hose compatible port and adapters — including optional adapters for full face snorkel masks made popular by many 3D print enthusiast who have adapted them for ventilators and as safety masks in hospitals.
COVID Blaster uses a positive airflow system that constantly pushes air through the system not only making breathing a more comfortable process, but also providing additional cooling to its UVC light system and uniquely shaped heatsink for unimpeded airflow. The air stream flow is controlled at its exit port by a thin silicone membrane, allowing the air to flow out and but not in. The membrane serves a secondary role of protecting your eyes from the harmful UVC light, yet providing a gently blue-violet glow letting you know it is in operation.
COVID Blaster uses the latest generation South Korean designed & manufactured UVC LEDs that are 200% more effective than those used in current UVC LED sterilization devices. Additionally a strip of four UVA LEDs surround the exit airflow port to reduce ozone by breaking down the O3 molecules further reducing breathing irritation.
COVID Blaster is designed to allow for rapid filter changing by removing the screw-on bottom cap that has a corrugated edge allowing air to pass up and through it for use on tables, desks or nightstands. The screw-on bottom can be changed out for an optional bottom with another 20mm port that allows it to be used inline with other breathing or ventilation systems adding additional protection to the patient.
COVID Blaster will also have an optional “smart” feature that has sensors to measure airflow, temperature, LED intensity, power and send it via BTE to your smartphone or tablet allowing you to monitor or set up real-time alerts.
Finally, most of the components are off-the-shelf, keeping its cost low. More importantly, funding this project will not only allow you to obtain COVID Blaster for your personal use, but we will also take care of getting it to an EMT, health clinic or hospital, firefighter, police if you choose to fund one for one of these valuable services. Even a small donation will help make the plans, Build Of Materials and all 3D fabrication files available to anyone who wants to use them to make their own or improve upon its design.
Inhouse testing has begun using prototypes of the UVC light & airflow system and monitoring its effectiveness in killing bacteria and fungi, as well testing battery duration and heat dissipation. All with positive results. Final pre-production prototype components are being fabricated currently to test workability and durability with additional design changes if necessary. Once the final design is completed, a production prototype will be sent to a testing lab for actual COVID-19 efficacy and certification as well further regulatory bodies like FDA’s COVID-19 fasttrack program and FCC if required. All tests results and prototype use will be made available through PDFs and videos before, during and after ship date.
The Kickstarter will start on September 1, 2020, and will run for 15 days to accelerate volume production for a ship date 45 days after the campaign ends. Schematics, print files and BOM will be available as soon as the campaign finishes.
