Atomfall has been described as a Survival Action game by its devs, Rebellion, and I think they're right in the way that it has similar survival gameplay to the likes of Resident Evil, but it's not hardcore survival, like DayZ.

In Atomfall resources are rare - you'll need to conserve bullets and consumables. You can craft more of certain items, and you can recover health by eating, but you don't starve if you fail to eat or drink.

Searching and gathering, or trading & bartering, for loot and resources is a key part of the gameplay of Atomfall, & I think for the most part it is well balanced & enjoyable.
