The Type 052B (NATO reporting name: Luyang-class) destroyer is a class of multi-role warships in the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). They were among the first PLAN warships to be equipped with a modern multifunction phased array radar, an essential component for the effective use of modern long-range air defense missiles. The design represents a significant improvement over previous Chinese surface combatants and incorporates many features reflecting contemporary naval architecture.

General Characteristics
Displacement: Approximately 5,850 tons full load.
Length: Around 155 meters (508 ft).
Beam: 17 meters (56 ft).
Draft: Estimated at 6 meters (20 ft).
Propulsion: COmbined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) arrangement with two Ukrainian DA80/DN80 gas turbines and two MTU Friedrichshafen 12V 1163TB83 diesel engines.
Speed: In excess of 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph).
Range: Up to 4,500 nautical miles (8,300 km; 5,200 mi) at 15 knots (28 km/h; 17 mph).
Crew: Around 280.
Armament and Electronic Warfare
Main Gun: A single 100 mm gun capable of firing at rates of up to 90 rounds per minute.
Air Defense Missiles: Equipped with the HQ-9 long-range air defense missile system, comparable to the Russian S-300 and American SM-2 systems.
Anti-Ship Missiles: YJ-83 (C-803) anti-ship cruise missiles, which have a range of up to 180 kilometers.
Close-In Weapon System (CIWS): At least one Type 730 seven-barrel 30 mm Gatling gun for point defense against missiles and aircraft.
Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW): Yu-7 torpedoes, a hull-mounted sonar, and a variable depth sonar system.
Sensors and Processing Systems
Radar: The Type 052B utilizes a multifunction phased array radar system, which is a significant advancement over the preceding generations of radar equipment on Chinese warships.
Fire Control: Advanced fire control systems are integrated to handle the guidance of both surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missiles.
Electronic Warfare: Electronic countermeasure (ECM) systems for deception and jamming are incorporated to enhance survivability against enemy sensors and weaponry.
Sonar: Hull-mounted and towed array sonar systems are employed for anti-submarine operations.
Navigation: Equipped with modern satellite navigation systems, which provide the destroyer with precise location data, crucial for navigation as well as targeting purposes.
Aviation Facilities
The Type 052B destroyers are equipped with a helicopter deck and hangar capable of accommodating one medium helicopter, which enhances its anti-submarine and search and rescue capabilities. The common helicopter deployed is the Kamov Ka-28 or the domestic Z-9C.
Electronic Systems
Communication: Satellite communication (SATCOM) and secure radio systems for real-time data and voice communication.
Data Links: These ships are equipped with advanced data links to network with other PLAN vessels and aircraft for coordinated operations.
Stealth Features
The hull design and superstructure have incorporated aspects of stealth technology to reduce radar cross-section (RCS). Features such as sloped surfaces and reduced superstructure clutter are visible, intended to minimize the reflection of radar waves.
Operational Role
The Type 052B serves a range of roles from air defense and command of a task force, to anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare. It is also capable of performing missions related to maritime interdiction and escorting high-value assets.

Development and Upgrades
The Type 052B destroyers were seen as a stepping stone between the earlier Type 052 and the more advanced Type 052C. The ships have likely undergone various upgrades during their service life to maintain relevance in the face of rapid technological evolution in naval warfare.
As a product of China's rapidly modernizing naval force, the Type 052B destroyer has served as a bridge towards more advanced warships, contributing to the PLAN's blue-water aspirations and showcasing the growing industrial and military capabilities of China.
