IS IT WORTH IT?! | A Review of Sea of Thieves in About 3 Minutes!
A detailed review of Sea Of Thieves in 3 minutes! Our goal is to help you decide whether or not it's worth buying and playing in 2021. Thanks for watching!
Hi it’s Zach from 3 Minute Game Reviews and the time has finally come for us to do a review of Sea of Thieves which was developed by Rare, published by XBOX Game Studios and originally came out in 2018 with a re-release on Steam in 2020. Big shoutout to A.K.-2006 and F3riteCore for getting in touch to request this review. Also thanks to Microsoft for reaching out with a free copy of the game so we could check it out, though we don’t let that influence our reviews in any way so with all that said and done just sit back, buckle up and enjoy the ride!
In Sea Of Thieves you play as a crew member aboard one of 3 different ship types that vary in complexity depending on the size of your party. There’s the small and agile sloop for 1 to 2 players, the medium sized, double masted brig for 2 to 3 players and finally there’s the humongous Galleon with it’s 3 masts and an impressive amount of cannons for 3 to 4 players.
It’s a multiplayer open world exploration game set in the golden age of sail and it’s got some of the cleanest and most impressive visuals I’ve ever seen and the way the ocean and the waves move and the feeling you get when your ship gets tossed around in a storm is just fantastic.
It supports cross play between XBOX consoles, PC and anyone using the xcloud game streaming service.
There’s 2 game modes to choose from with Adventure mode being the main way to play. Basically you share a server with up to 20 other players on a large, open and incredibly detailed map and you go around solving clues to complete storyline missions known as Tall Tales like the new Pirates Life storyline where you have to rescue Jack Sparrow and help rescue the Sea of Thieves from an impending evil, aswell as looking for treasure which can be sold for gold.
Any gold you earn is used to buy cosmetics for your ship and your pirate by letting you change stuff like your sails, hull, cannons aswell as your hair, beard, your hat and your clothes, but we’ll talk more about gold and the overall character progression in a second.
Now although 20 players per server might not sound like a lot, it actually works really well since it helps to create a tense and exciting atmosphere where you’re just as likely to encounter a deadly skeleton ship or a leviathan as a player ship, and you never quite know what to expect so you have to be prepared for everything.
Aswell as adventure mode there’s another mode called Arena which lets you get into the action a bit faster. Basically you queue up for a match and spawn on a ship together with your crew mates and 4 enemy ships and you all basically fight over a single treasure chest highlighted by a big purple waypoint, with the goal of digging it up and bringing it back to a designated drop off point before your opponents do the same, all the while trying not to get sunk in the process.
Whether you want to play solo or with a full crew of friends you’re able to play through all the content the game has to offer, though it’s definitely at its best when playing with others in a team that communicates and coordinates well together.
Thankfully there’s a built-in matchmaker to help with that and it usually only takes a few seconds to find a crew, but there’s a lot of players out there without a microphone which often leads to a forgettable or out right frustrating experience, so if you’re looking for a little more cooperation your best bet is to find like-minded players in the looking for group channels on the official discord.
I didn’t have any issues with bugs or the overall performance with an average fps of over 80 using an RTX 3070 and i5 10400F processor. The controls for steering and managing your ship feel intuitive and it doesn’t take an expert ship enthusiast to quickly figure out how everything works.
Overall it’s got a lot to offer with its awe inspiring visuals, breathtaking open world map and a decent variety of cunning AI and player opponents to beat and there’s no doubt it’ll take you over 100 hours to complete all the storyline missions and max out your reputation with all 8 of trading companies by completing voyages which involve solving riddles to find the location of buried treasure, but one area where the game’s sorely lacking is in providing any form of character progression because, well there isn’t any.
Any gold you earn is...
