+SPOILERS FOR METROID DREAD+
Metroid Dread has been out for a while now, and yet that still hasn’t stopped me from continuing to enjoy the heck out of it.
It is an absolutely show-stopping experience, one that easily blows other metroidvania games out of the water to remind everyone just who started this game design genre in the first place.
When the game’s Spanish developer Mercurysteam first developed Metroid: Samus Returns, a remake of the Gameboy game Metroid: Return of Samus (which desperately needed a remake… or uh… and official remake) I got the feeling that it made sense as to why Nintendo trusted them with the franchise; it was obvious they understand the appeal.
It’s Samus versus a whole swath of alien monsters that want her dead yesterday; and Mercurysteam got that, and stuck to those guns.
And even still, that remake simply pales in comparison to Metroid Dread.
Dread is both the true sequel to Metroid Fusion, taking many of the horror and stealth themed sections of that game, and amping things up to high degrees, all while retaining many of the systematic improvements made in Metroid Samus Returns.
Put simply, and despite recent concerning developer controversies, they nailed it. They really nailed it. The question is now though, is it the best Metroid game? Many have been making this claim, but does it succeed where the older fail, and refine all the successes that came before it? Let’s have a look.
