The issue here is the use of this "generic lord" in actual campaign, and there, as a hold the fort guy, figuratively and literally, he's extremely useful because as much as warrior priests are great for their hero bonuses, the battle prayers are available EXTREMELY early here. They were toned down a bit to not compete with Volkmar along the way. Nonetheless, the utility factor is pretty high, they're just a lot more resilient than offensively oriented (the reverse of the warrior priest in that sense). Franz can recruit them at Rank 3 from Turn 1.
