With The World Ends With You: The Animation having released 2 episodes so far. Something that really struck me about the show was just how different Neku is in the show from how he was in the games. I think That Neku’s story in TWEWY is one of my favorite in all of game and so a lot of red flags went up for me while watching The Animation. Whether it was Neku's introduction, his relationship with Shiki, or his interactions with the Reaper Izuki, his personality, motives, and beliefs all felt very diluted when compared with TWEWY: Final Remix. And so today I want to take a look at the story of the story in both the game and the anime for The World Ends With You and how I think that the animation may be setting a bad foundation in the first episode for Neku's character moving forward when compared with the game's iteration of him.
