Review – A surprisingly adept Metroidvania. The styling is simple and it keeps the graphical style minimalistic, whilst not resorting to 8/16-bit pixel art, that is fashionable. It looks more like a Studio Ghibli Anime. This flew under the radar for me but I got it free with Epic and saw positive reviews. I’m a sucker for Metroivanias. The premise is to fly to an island and activate a magnet to stick it to the other islands in the game. So eventually, all islands will be reunited and create one big world. Every time an island becomes attached, it opens up new ways into parts of islands that were previously inaccessible. This is a very unique idea and it works very well. You gain moves and power ups throughout the game. There aren’t any spectacular or massive power ups, but the wall climb is an absolute belter of a traversal tool. You can really whizz through the levels once this is unlocked. You can also choose a lot of the power ups you can upgrade to. Later in the game, you can buy the ability to show all the power ups on the map so I found this to be super satisfying as I was able to 100% the game without using a guide. Very rare for a Metroidvania. This a lot of modern quality of life improvements for this type of game. For starters, it remembered anything you have gained, even if you die and respawn at a checkpoint. There are lots of save points and warp points to fast travel around, so you don’t have to backtrack the same areas too much. The checkpoints are most useful for the bosses which are very difficult. I had to have many retries on the earlier bosses in particular as I was learning the game. Especially since there were limited health bonuses, and I forgot about the dodge button (*). I appreciated the infinite retries right outside the boss door. This stopped me lowering the difficulty because it’s not too much of inconvenience to retry. The bosses are a bit Dark Soulsy but less annoying. It’s very kind of them to give a difficulty setting too so that everyone can experience this game. The flying sections in between islands a nice change but the difficulty of the bosses again can be ruthless. Fortunately for me, I am a shmup veteran, but I could see a lot of people struggling hard in the flying sections if they aren’t used to these kinds of games. In conclusion, I thoroughly enjoyed this game and felt rewarded by the tough but fair bosses, and being able to 100% all the items without spending an eon re-traversing every centimetre, or going to a guide.
