Super Meat Boy Forever playthrough, guide
Review – This is a rock-hard game just like the original Super Meatboy but the gameplay is slightly different. Instead of controlling your character like a normal platformer, your character just keeps running and you cannot directly control the direction. There are only 2 buttons used in this game – any button to jump/air punch, and down on the D-pad to slide/dive in the air. This sounds extremely simple but somehow the level design is so good, that it feels like you are performing multiple combos constantly.
There are loads of levels and each one stays fresh because they bring in a new concept with each one and don’t tend to repeat the same concept in later levels, unless to just add variety.
I was astonished by how many ideas they had come up with to keep the game entertaining. I kept expecting to have a lot of levels using the same idea, and dreading some ideas repeating after I struggled past them, but the game remains fresh throughout.
Fortunately, there are infinite lives and multiples checkpoints throughout each level, which is an absolute must because some parts can be extremely difficult. Not just by skill level either. Some parts can be very hard to figure out just how to proceed too.
The challenge is always fair but the boss fights do take the piss. They are extreme and all require trial and error gameplay over and over. They can get very repetitive and I always dislike them at first but then after a while, I got into a zen like mode and couldn’t stop restarting. Even though my brain was telling me, “At least have a 5-minute break. You’re getting worse” Which was true. The longer you play, the more mistakes you make. If you have a little break and come back, you find yourself not doing stupid mistakes. Until you get to far into the grind again. I only followed my own advice on the last boss and wish I followed it sooner.
These bosses are some of the hardest of any game. Absolutely ruthless. You need to keep the rhythm and if you slip up once, you have to start again.
I only played through the main story levels but there is much more content. There is a bonus world after you finish it, and dark world equivalents of each level. Plus, bonus levels to unlock and time trials for each level. So, there is loads to keep you going of you are sadistic enough.
I was just happy to finish the game at the story. Especially after that rock hard last boss.
