ITG Stamina Meta in 2025 | How Modding, FSRs & RC Oil Changed Dance Games
In the year 1998, Dance Dance Revolution hit the market and everybody was going crazy worldwide! In Europe, Dancing Stage arrived, but it's basically the same thing. There were two main ways to play the game at the time: speed (by playing the hardest songs, or, freestyle). Most professional players would play without the bar. With the release of DDR Max (6th Mix), the first 10 footer would appear: Max 300. This song almost created a shift in gameplay where people started to use the bar. By the time DDR Extreme arrived, the community was quite divided, although, most people held the bar to play.
\nWith the release of ITG in 2004, there were very few no bar players. Pickles and JBoy being some of the very few no bar survivors from the DDR period (1998-2004).
\nAs the game shifted, in 2005, holding the bar was a very normal part of playing the game. Throughout the years, many things changed within the game: Removing brackets and adding modding to the sensors to make the sensors more sensitive were common place.
\nFast forward a few more years, custom content was created without hard patterns: crossovers, mines, freezes, candles.... in favor of emerging stamina players. There were two stamina players that really stood out at the time: Mad Matt and Zeteroux. The difficulty limit seemed to be somewhere between 20 and 22. Only the really physically inclined players could ever dream of these difficulties.
\nFast forward a few more years, people were turning off Decent and Way Off judgements, using baby powder and countersinking screws.
\nMad Matt went as far to create a new game called Stomperz which had 2 lifebars instead of one.
\nModifications were done to hardware: Sensor replacement, bar adjustment (or replacement) in order to push up those extra few difficulties.\nLater: Players began to slide rather than step\nLater: Players began to flick the toes to the side rather than slide.\nEach year, more modification became normalized and really created a really niche sub-community in dance games called: ITG Stamina.
\nWhat is now commonplace in 2025 was a pipedream back in 1998.
\nLet me take you on a journey of modern day ITG stamina in 2025, and let me know your thoughts!
