''It's Kind of a Funny Story'' is a comedy drama movie starring Keir Gilchrist, Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts, Viola Davis and Lauren Graham.  The movie, which opened in U.S. theaters on October 8, 2010 on a limited basis, is an adaptation of the 2006 novel ''It's Kind of a Funny Story'' by Ned Vizzini.  In the film, Gilchrist stars as 16-year-old Craig Gilner.  When Craig realizes his battle with depression is getting the best of him, he checks himself in to a Brooklyn psychiatric hospital.  Because the facility's youth ward is full, Craig is forced to stay for the mandatory five days in the adult psychiatric wing of the hospital.  There, he meets and befriends patient Bobby (played by Galifianakis) and finds himself attracted to fellow teen patient Noelle (played by Roberts).  ''It's Kind of a Funny Story'' is directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. 

Reviews for ''It's Kind of a Funny Story'' began coming out several days before the film hit theaters.  Overall, reviews were mixed to generally favorable.  On October 8, 2010, ''It's Kind of a Funny Story'' garnered a 63 percent "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes' "Tomatometer."  The movie scored a 57 out of a possible 100 on Metacritic.com.

Of the major movie critics who liked ''It's Kind of a Funny Story,'' many praised the movie's "offbeat sensibility" and the "easy chemistry" of the ensemble cast. Justin Chang of '"Variety'' says the filmmakers provide "perhaps the sharpest showcase yet for Zach Galifianakis' outsized talents" in ''It's Kind of a Funny Story.''  Peter Travers of ''Rolling Stone'' echoes that opinion, calling Galifianakis a "comic force of nature" who "digs down" in the movie "and delivers a beautifully nuanced performance that gets under your skin." 

Of the critics who didn't seem to like the film, many said they just didn't find it that funny.  They include ''Hollywood Reporter'' critic Michael Rechtshaffen, who calls ''It's Kind of a Funny Story'' a "dramatically inert, lethargic dramedy that isn't nearly as quirky and poignant is it perceives itself."

Bottom line: not every critic agrees on whether ''It's Kind of a Funny Story'' actually tells a funny story, but if you're a Galifianakis fan you might want to hit the theater for this one.
