This is a pretty old take, the actual proper technically correct name is still GNU/Linux.
But in a context of talking about free/libre software operating systems, saying "the GNU operating system" is fine.
Specifying Linux is not needed, but is perfectly reasonable to say.

Talking about GNU systems and telling people "to use the GNU OS" is how I adopted the idea from this speech.
When I first recorded this speech I had just had this idea.
