Francine’s Journey with ADHD and Sensory Sensitivities

My son, Francine, was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of five. From an early age, he faced significant sensory sensitivities and intense fears, which made attending school a challenge. He was extremely sensitive to lights and loud sounds, such as music and fireworks, and even had fears of everyday objects like the water dispenser and refrigerator doors. He also had a strong preference for keeping doors closed and would become very distressed if they were left open.

When he turned six, we enrolled him in occupational therapy to help him manage these challenges. With continued therapy and support, he was able to attend school, and he continued his education up to grade six while still undergoing occupational therapy sessions.

Francine is an exceptionally intelligent and inquisitive child. He asks a lot of questions and has a strong ability to reason things out. One of the unique aspects of his personality is his deep attachment to certain personal choices, which are essential to his sense of identity. For example, he refuses to have his hair cut short, as it makes him feel uncomfortable and distressed. Additionally, he chose to change his name from Oren to Francine, and he becomes extremely upset when people call him by his birth name. These aspects of his identity are very important to him, and when they are disregarded—such as someone cutting his hair without his consent—he feels deeply hurt and frustrated.

Despite his sensitivities, Francine is an incredibly kind and gentle person. He is not aggressive and does not resort to violence, nor does he hit or throw things when upset. While he may occasionally raise his voice when provoked, these moments are rare. Most of the time, he prefers to express his feelings through words rather than actions.

One particular instance that stood out to me was when we were at the office, and I noticed something seemed off with Francine. His face showed signs of distress. When I asked him what was wrong, he shared that he had been banned from a Discord group. It was clear how much this affected him, as social connections and online communities are very important to him. This experience served as a reminder of how crucial it is to listen to his concerns, validate his feelings, and offer guidance through challenges, especially in the digitl space.

Francine’s journey is filled with unique challenges, but also with remarkable growth. He continues to navigate the world with kindness, curiosity, and resilience, showing that, despite his struggles, he has a wealth of potential to be nurtured and supported.

His concern was that he had been banned from the group because he was accused of transphobia, being a danger to others, and even of showing his private parts—accusations that were completely false. These accusations deeply hurt him, as he had never engaged in such behavior.
He simply stated, “I’m a boy because I have a penis,” and clarified that it didn’t apply to others. Afterward, someone falsely accused him of showing his private parts and sent fabricated proof, leading to his ban from the group. This whole situation deeply affected him, as the claims were completely untrue.
I just need some clarity on this situation because Francine is really upset and depressed about it. I’m deeply concerned that this may have an impact on his health, and it worries me that he could become physically sick from the stress. Please understand how serious this is for us. Thank you for your support and understanding.
