Golf games have long been a guilty pleasure of mine, and the Konami-published Jack Nicklaus’ Greatest 18 Holes of Major Championship Golf for the NES (https://youtu.be/oOitBakgLKo) was a major childhood favorite. I remember being pretty excited when Nintendo Power announced that a SNES version was on the way.
We rented it around the time it came out, and I thought it was pretty good. The core gameplay is exactly the same as the NES version's - or any other version's, for that matter - in that it's easy to pick up and play, but the gameplay is nuanced enough to keep things interesting.
The SNES version is a nice upgrade over the 8-bit cart. With its digitized sprites and scenery, the in-game graphics resemble the fancy VGA presentation of Jack Nicklaus Signature Edition (the 1992 entry in the PC series), and the super snazzy music jingles that play before each hole are my favorite part of the whole package. The easy listening music is a bit corny but it's thoroughly memorable, and it's packed full of those classic, nostalgia-inducing instrument samples that were shared among so many early SNES games.
I enjoyed pouring the time into learning Jack Nicklaus Golf top to bottom, and after all these years, I still pop it in for a quick round on occasion. If you're the sort of gamer who can find merit in a thirty-year-old golf game, give it a shot!
