A playthrough of Nintendo and St. Giga's 1995 action-adventure game for the Super Nintendo, BS The Legend of Zelda, Chapter 1.

Chapter 1 covers the first two dungeons. If you want to jump straight to the gameplay, the intro ends at 8:16.

BS The Legend of Zelda (BSゼルダの伝説) is a quasi-remake of the original Zelda game for the SNES, but unlike most SNES games, this one was never released on a cartridge. Like BS The Legend of Zelda: Ancient Stone Tablets (https://youtu.be/B49NZISlrhQ), the game could only be played by connecting a Super Famicom to St. Giga's digital satellite service with the BS Satellaview add-on, and it was split into four stories, one broadcast each week.

Like with my playthrough of Ancient Stone Tablets, in this video I'm playing a version of the game that has been recreated for offline play and fully translated into English. It uses Byuu's MSU-1 mapper to allow for full streaming audio and FMV on a real SNES console using a flashcart. If you're interested in trying it for yourself, you can find more information and the game's files at http://bszelda.zeldalegends.net/bszelda.shtml

Each of BS Zelda's four stories lasts an hour and covers two dungeons. (There was also a second quest, "Map 2," with four new episodes released later on). The world is a heavily condensed version of the Hyrule seen in the original game, and the adventure has been reworked to better suit the episodic format. Physical barriers prevent your character (who isn't Link!) from wandering too far off the beaten path, the new dungeon layouts are less devious, and the narrator and the old man who says, "It's dangerous to go alone. Take this!" explain the game mechanics, announce special events, and offer hints to point you in the right direction. The fandub is a nice bit of work, too. It's as corny as it is thoroughly entertaining.

BS Zelda is a fun remix of Link's first adventure. Since each chapter has to be completed during its hour-long broadcast, the game's not nearly as difficult as a typical Zelda game. I'm fine with that, though. It's a pleasantly breezy and nostalgic experience that isn't likely to frustrate any long-time series fans. It's also pretty amazing to have such a polished way to experience something like this decades after its final broadcast, especially one that's in English and fully playable on real hardware.

If you're a fan of the original or if you'd like to see a cutting-edge gaming experience circa 1995, BS The Legend of Zelda doesn't disappoint.

(Side note: I've replaced some of the music to avoid being hounded by YouTube's copyright scan, in case you were wondering why you were hearing Wand of Gamelon tunes at times.)
